The short answer

A useful estimate explains the work being proposed, what the price includes, and what is outside that scope. Ask about visit or diagnostic fees separately, and confirm how any additional work would be approved.

Start with the scope

Ask which problem the proposed work addresses and how the technician reached that conclusion. An equipment replacement quote and a repair quote may solve different problems, so the total alone does not tell you whether they are comparable.

For a replacement, ask for the proposed equipment details. For repair work, ask which components or sections are included and which existing parts will remain.

Questions to ask before approving

  • Does this include the visit, diagnosis, labor, and materials?
  • Are permits, removal, disposal, and any surface restoration included or excluded?
  • What conditions could require additional work?
  • Will I receive an updated scope and price before that work begins?
  • What written warranty terms apply to equipment and labor?
  • How long is the estimate valid, and what payment terms apply?

Why there is no universal price here

Access, the condition of existing equipment or piping, and the work required can change the scope. This resource does not publish a current Family price list or a diagnostic fee. Confirm the applicable charges directly before booking.

Save the written estimate and any approved changes. They provide a clear reference for what was agreed, particularly when comparing repair and replacement options.
